چکیده

This article provides an overview of the literature on hypotheses testing when the hypotheses or models under consideration are non-nested. Two models are said to be non-nested if neither can be obtained from the other by some limiting process, including the imposition of equality and/or inequality constrains on one of the model's parameters. Relevant concepts such as closeness measures and pseudo-true values are discussed and alternative approaches to testing non-nested hypotheses, including the Cox procedure, artificial nesting and the encompassing approach, are reviewed. The Voung approach to model selection is also covered.

Molecular survey of avian circoviruses in some non-psittacine birds and detection of a novel canary circovirus in a pigeon

Background: Circoviruses are small, non-enveloped, single stranded DNA viruses. There is scarce information about these agents in non-psittacine birds. Aims: It is attempted to detect and characterize circoviruses in non-psittacine birds. Methods: Forty-five samples were collected from different non-psittacine species belonging to seven avian o...

Non-parametric Specification Testing of Non-nested Econometric Models.*

We consider the non-nested testing prqblem of non-parametric regressions. We show that, when the regression functions are unknown under both the null and the alternative hypotheses, an extension of the J-test procedure of Davidson and Mackinnon (1981) will lead to a test statistic with well defined asymptotic properties. The derivation of the test statistic involves double kernel estimation. Mo...

Errors in Variables and Properties of Statistical Inference by Lloyd

Lloyd J. Edwards. Errors in Variables and Properties of Statistical Inference (under the direction of Dr. P. K. Sen.) The objective here is to investigate the effects errors in variables have on tests of separate families of linear hypotheses (Le., non-nested linear hypotheses) using the methodology introduced by D. R. Cox (1961, 1962). Two hypotheses are called separate if an arbitrary simple ...

A method for comparing non-nested models with application to astrophysical searches for new physics

Searches for unknown physics and decisions between competing astrophysical models to explain data both rely on statistical hypothesis testing. The usual approach in searches for new physical phenomena is based on the statistical Likelihood Ratio Test (LRT) and its asymptotic properties. In the common situation, when neither of the two models under comparison is a special case of the other i.e.,...

Statistical tests of gamma-distributed rate heterogeneity in models of sequence evolution in phylogenetics.

Likelihood ratio tests (LRTs) for comparing models of sequence evolution have become popular over the last few years (Goldman 1993; Yang, Goldman and Friday 1994, 1995; Huelsenbeck and Crandall 1997; Huelsenbeck and Rannala 1997). In their simplest form, such tests compare a simpler null hypothesis (H0) with a more complex alternative hypotheses (H1) which is a generalization of H0. H0 can be d...
